In the agricultural community of Oaxaca, Mexico, around 80 farmers have created a 3 hectare sunflower sanctuary, home to an estimated 200,000 sunflowers, to help protect bees from extinction. This initiative not only aims to conserve bees by providing them with a favorable environment for pollination but also combats climate change due to sunflowers' resilience and ability to create small ecosystems. The project, which started in 2019, also includes the cultivation of native corn and is pioneering the concept of 'agritourism,' offering visitors an opportunity to connect with nature and support the project through tourism. The sunflowers, known for their nutritional benefits and use in various applications, are planted in March, making it the optimal time to visit. This initiative highlights the importance of bee conservation and the benefits of sunflower cultivation while promoting ecological tourism.
