Russian consumers are showing a preference for yams and sweet potatoes despite the country's historical love for potatoes. This shift is evident in the significant increase in imports of these exotic tubers, with sweet potato imports surging 12 times over the last five years and yams eight times. The trend is largely driven by social media influencers, with sweet potatoes finding favor for their nutritional benefits and variety, and yams due to their heart-friendly characteristics. Egypt, Honduras, Israel, Guatemala, China, and Vietnam are the primary suppliers of sweet potatoes to Russia, while Sub-Saharan Africa, especially Ghana and Nigeria, dominate the yam market. This shift towards diverse vegetable options highlights a growing global demand for these tubers.
