Tobacco cultivation in the Southern Region of Brazil

The Brazilian Tobacco Growers Association (Afubra) recently released data on tobacco cultivation in the Southern Region of Brazil. In the 2022/23 harvest, a total of 490 municipalities, of the 1,191 in the South Region, were involved in tobacco production. This involvement covers approximately 125 thousand families, generating an estimated gross income of almost R$11 billion. These impressive numbers highlight the importance of tobacco as a crop in the region. The president of Afubra, Marcilio Drescher, highlighted the revenue generated by tobacco producers, comparing it with other crops in the same period. According to Marcilio Drescher, "the yield from one hectare of tobacco is equivalent to 6.37 hectares of soybeans and 7.66 hectares of corn.
