Australia has detected the Tomato Brown Ruffled Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) in two farms in the North Adelaide Plains region, putting the country's A$5.8 billion vegetable industry at risk. ToBRFV, which affects tomatoes, peppers, and chili peppers, is a quarantine pest in China and is known to cause yield and quality decline. The South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Resources is collaborating with affected businesses to implement quarantine measures and investigate the source of the outbreak. Plant breeder Rijk Zwaan has developed disease-resistant tomatoes under the Rugose Defense brand, which will be tested in Australia from 2022, and is emphasizing the importance of farm hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus.
