The demand for Italian tropical fruits, such as avocados and mangoes, is rapidly increasing, but the domestic production is not sufficient to meet the market demand, leading to a reliance on imports from countries like Peru, Colombia, Israel, and Morocco. The limited and unstructured nature of the Italian tropical fruit growing industry, along with factors like climate change, Spanish competition, and plant diseases, have caused traditional crops like citrus fruits to be in crisis, leading to a shift towards more profitable tropical fruits. The business opportunities in the tropical and subtropical fruit sectors have sparked interest from investors and funds, with the Calabria region promoting new plantings and tree replantings in these sectors, receiving 223 eligible projects for 16 million euros in funding.
