Two of the three sugar mills in Sarlahi, Nepal have started operating for the current season, while the Annapurna Sugar Mills remains closed. The farmers had protested for the government to fix the minimum support price of sugarcane and pay the subsidy entitlement, but have allowed the sugar industry to resume operation for now. The industry has set a target of crushing about 3.5 million quintals of sugarcane this season, despite the disagreement of sugarcane farmers with the fixed price of Rs 635 per quintal set by the government.
