Master beekeeper Lynne Ingram has started the UK Honey Authenticity Network (HAN UK) to combat honey fraud, which has increased due to advanced technology and science, leading to the use of undetectable syrups. The issue threatens legitimate beekeepers and the pollination of crops. The European Union has updated its honey regulations for clearer labeling and traceability, while the British Beekeepers Association is pushing for industry protection and consumer awareness. Researchers at Aston University are using a more accurate and faster honey fraud detection method, based on Fluorescence Excitation-Emission Spectroscopy (FLE), with plans to make it accessible to producers or consumers via a smartphone app, aiming to create a honey database for machine learning-assisted identification.
