The UK government has announced emergency measures to prevent an African swine fever (ASF) outbreak, which could potentially threaten the country's £8 billion pig industry and £600 million in annual pork and pork product exports. To implement these measures, the government will ban personal imports of pork and pork products from the European Economic Area, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Switzerland, effective September 27, unless these products are processed and packaged according to EU commercial standards and are no larger than 2 kg. This decision aims to safeguard the UK's biosecurity by ensuring that infected meat does not enter the country, as the UK has thus far avoided an ASF outbreak. Commercial meat imports will continue to be inspected at the border to maintain this safety standard.
