Historic rainfall has led to a significant decrease in Ukrainian corn crop outputs, with the US Department of Agriculture predicting a five-year low of 27 million metric tons, and expecting decreases in the outputs of wheat and sunflower seeds as well. Despite these challenges, exports through the Ukraine Grain Initiative sea corridors are expected to double, providing some relief to cereal commodity prices. The US has launched the Ukraine Agriculture Resilience Initiative to provide support to the country's agriculture sector. For 2022-2023, Russia is projected to export a record 42 million metric tons of wheat, playing a crucial role in global food security. Despite the ongoing conflict and extreme weather, the Ukraine Grain Initiative continues to operate, with 57 ships having departed from Ukrainian ports in December, primarily headed for Europe and Asia.
