Despite this increase, the overall use of antibiotics is still 17.9% lower than in 2020 and 69% lower than in 2015.
Data collected through the Electronic Medicines Book (eMB) show that the use of antibiotics in pigs in the United Kingdom was 86 mg/PCU (milligrams per population correction unit) in 2024 – a slight increase from the 85 mg/PCU in 2023.
The disease challenges faced by some pig producers in 2023 persisted in 2024, but the quarterly utilization data indicate that the peak has passed and that the use of antibiotics is decreasing.
The last stocks of zinc oxide, a product that reduces post-weaning diarrhea, are expected to have been used at the beginning of 2024, and antibiotics are one of the available treatments to help control this condition.
Data from 2025 will provide information on the full impact of the withdrawal of zinc oxide.
