Vietnam is set to begin exporting grapefruits to the US within the next 60 days, according to Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Tran Thanh Nam. The US may also soon allow Vietnamese coconuts to be exported. Vietnam currently has 105,400 hectares of grapefruit production, yielding nearly 950,000 tons, and is expected to harvest around 140,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2022. The country has already been exporting six types of fresh fruit to the US. In 2019, Vietnam's grapefruit exports generated just over $4.8 million, and this increased to $10.9 million in the first three quarters of 2020.
