In 2023, the United States set a record for papaya imports at 501.2 million pounds, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth and increasing per capita availability to 1.51 pounds. However, in the first five months of 2024, imports dropped by 4.8% compared to the same period in 2023, mainly due to reduced volumes from Guatemala, which is still recovering from a tropical storm in October 2022. Mexico remains the largest supplier, though its shipments also declined slightly. Retail prices for papayas from Mexico and Central America rose by 12% in early 2024, while prices for Brazilian varieties decreased due to increased exports.
