The German Ministry of Agriculture has proposed regulations for unpackaged meat, including pork, lamb, goat, and poultry, to carry labels indicating the country of breeding and slaughter. The proposal, expected to be adopted this summer and effective from early 2024, aims to provide consumers with clear information about the meat's origin. The proposal also permits voluntary regional indication of origin. This proposal is a response to a 2020 European Court of Justice ruling that Member States can mandate food origin labels to prevent consumer misleading, particularly in the case of milk and its derivatives.
