Over 10 million leva are needed to restore protective forest belts in the Balchik municipality in the coming years, with 2,340 decares of facilities in poor condition, according to the 2024 monitoring. "These are 2,700 belts that need to be surveyed and their condition described. The latest estimates for restoration were around 4,000 leva per decare," explained Eng. Radoslav Radev, deputy director of State Hunting Economy in Balchik, during a field tour of protective forest belts within the scientific conference dedicated to saving the unique forest strips in the country. 72% of all protective forest belts are located in three forestry and hunting economies – Dobrich, Balchik, and General Toshevo. "In the last 6 years, their health condition has sharply deteriorated, with ash trees starting to dry out first. Since last year, the worst part is that oak trees have begun to die as well.
