Uruguay has started vaccinating poultry against avian flu using vaccines from the US, with more to come from Mexico. The vaccination will be distributed in several stages, with the initial 900,000 doses given to hatchery birds and 8 million doses to breeding hens and egg layers. Despite ten outbreaks of avian flu in the country, no commercial establishments have been affected. The government insists that the vaccination will not affect the safety of poultry products for consumption.
