A report by Potatoes USA for the period October – December 2022 reveals a mixed trend in potato retail sales. While dollar sales rose by 17.2%, volume sales saw a decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period in the previous year, but still surpassed pre-pandemic levels. All potato categories experienced an increase in dollar sales, with frozen potatoes leading at 33.1%. The largest volume sales decline was in instant potatoes at 7.6%. Despite a drop in volume sales for most categories, fresh potato dollar sales grew for all types except fingerling and purple. The average retail price per pound of potatoes fell to $2.15, making them more affordable despite price hikes.
