Australia's lamb export market has seen a surge, with the United States becoming the largest market and lamb exports to all other destinations also increasing by 22%. Over 6,800 tonnes of lamb was shipped to the US in March, a 33% increase from the seasonal trend. However, lamb volumes to China have decreased by 10%. Despite this, demand for mutton from China remains strong, making up 45% of the market. Australia's mutton exports to the US have been lacking in 2022. A new trade deal with India for Australian sheep meat is expected to diversify the industry and offset lower demand from the US. Malaysia is the second largest destination for Australian mutton, with a 16% lift in March. Overall, total lamb export flows reached 24,450 tonnes in March.
