Vice President Ma'ruf Amin of Indonesia has visited the Sermayam Sugar Cane Plantation in Merauke Regency to inspect the progress of a pilot project aimed at establishing South Papua as a center for the sugar industry. The country's reliance on imported sugar is increasing annually, with imports expected to reach 6 million tons in 2023. Amin hopes that the development of sugar cane plantations in Merauke can lead to self-sufficiency and achieve sugar content above 11 percent, similar to Australia. The vice president sees this as a step towards making Merauke a hub for agriculture and plantations, potentially becoming a 'food barn' for the nation.
