World Coffee Research (WCR) and the Western Highlands Forestry Science Institute (WASI) have announced a new partnership to develop improved robusta coffee varieties to ensure sustainable robusta coffee exports. This partnership marks an exciting step towards accelerating coffee innovation to help Vietnamese farmers improve coffee productivity, quality, climate resilience and pest and disease resistance. Vietnam is the world's leading exporter of robusta coffee with around 640,000 hectares. Coffee is expected to generate over $5 billion in export revenue in the 2023-2024 crop year and account for over 12% of Vietnam's agricultural GDP. The varieties developed through this collaboration will contribute to WASI’s ongoing efforts to increase sustainable production and support coffee farmers in meeting the challenges of high temperatures and long dry seasons that have affected production in recent years.
