The import of Vietnamese oysters has been increasing in recent years, with about 3,000 metric tons imported last year, close to 1/5 of the domestically produced quantity. However, it is difficult for consumers to distinguish between domestic and Vietnamese oysters in the market, as the latter are cheaper. To address this issue, the Fisheries Laboratory has developed an "Oyster Origin Identification Technology" with a 97.3% identification rate, which has been recommended by the Food and Drug Administration. The technology uses multi-element testing to determine the origin of oysters and can help prevent the sale of Vietnamese oysters as domestic ones.
