Watermelon/Cepea: Offer is low in RS and BA in Brazil

This week (18 to 22/03), the price of watermelon registered few changes compared to last week. In Teixeira de Freitas (BA) there was a slight reaction to the very restricted supply of fruit, due to the end of the harvest. The price of large watermelon (>12 kg) closed at R$1.74/kg, a slight increase of 7.1% compared to last week. Rio Grande do Sul finds itself in a similar situation, with the campaign coming to an end, and thus, the few fruits harvested are mainly concentrated within the state. The season is expected to end next week. In the market in Rio Grande do Sul, the price was R$1.52/kg, an increase of 2.8% in the same comparison. In São Paulo, productivity is being strongly affected by pests and high thermometers. According to Hortifrúti/Cepea collaborators, crops in São Paulo are facing high rates of whiteflies and thrips, reducing the amount of fruit produced, and those that do set are subject to burning due to the heat in the region.
