The Mars Institute's recent report reveals a downturn in the potential yields of major crops across the European Union, with the most significant drop seen in durum wheat. The average yield is now projected at 33 q/ha, marking a 4% decrease from the previous month's forecasts, attributed mainly to excess rainfall in France and Italy. Other grains such as soft wheat, spring and winter barley, and corn also show slight reductions in expected yields. Potatoes are expected to have the most substantial decrease at -3%. The weather conditions, including excessive rain, warm spring temperatures, and water deficits, have adversely affected planting and growth of summer crops, leading to increased pest and disease pressure. Despite these challenges, the majority of the EU's yield outlook remains equal to or above the five-year average for most crops.
