The World Food Programme has approached India for 200,000 tonnes of rice to support its humanitarian operations, as global food insecurity has escalated due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict. This request is made following the collapse of the UN-brokered Black Sea grain deal. The decision on India's response is under internal review and will be based on rice availability and the country's food security. The WFP has requested specific documentation to process the assistance. Meanwhile, food inflation in India increased to 4.49% in June 2023, up from 2.96% in May 2023, due to restricted grain movement from Russia and Ukraine.
