An investigation by the Commission in 2018 revealed that imports of "indica" type rice from Cambodia and Myanmar had increased by 79% in the last five seasons, causing difficulties for rice producers in the region. The application of tariffs for three years helped recover the profitability of community sector rice cultivation. However, a strong increase in imports is observed again eight months after the elimination of tariffs. The Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA) is calling for the reapplication of the safeguard clause and the closure of imports from Myanmar and Cambodia by the end of 2023.
