The President of the Sturgeon Breeders Union, Alexander Novikov, estimates that around 40% of black caviar on the market is counterfeit and sold as Russian. Counterfeit caviar costs significantly less, with smuggled caviar being priced at $100 per kg compared to the legal price of $200-230 per kg. Russian businesses are buying cheap Chinese caviar and packaging it as Russian, taking advantage of the lower quality and potentially harmful production methods used in China. Strengthening control by law enforcement agencies and implementing labeling to track the product's origin are proposed solutions to the issue.
