Locally produced melons are available in Moldova for the third consecutive week, following a significant price drop from 18 lei/kg to 12 lei/kg ($1.05/kg to $0.62/kg). The decrease in wholesale prices is linked to the product's initial high pricing, which was sold only in select supermarket chains and boutique retailers. Currently, melon prices have stabilized at 12 lei/kg, the same as last year's mid-July rates. However, market operators anticipate an increase in melon prices as the season progresses due to a substantial decrease in the sales of hybrid melon seeds by at least 60% and limited melon imports to Moldova, particularly from Ukraine. Additionally, the ongoing drought in the country could further impact melon production and pricing.
