A recent report by the EU coordinated action 'From the Hives' reveals a concerning issue of honey adulteration from non-EU countries, with 46% of samples found to contain invert sugars and other illegal substances. This fraudulent activity, aimed at capitalizing on the price gap between genuine and adulterated honey, has led to consumer misleadership. In response, the report suggests that the EU Commission should update honey amendment negotiations to include strategies for syrup adulteration detection and recommends including the countries of origin on honey labels to prevent misleading marketing. The Polish Beekeeping Association goes a step further, advocating for a complete ban on honey mixtures and demanding clear labeling of honey sources to maintain market integrity and prevent consumer confusion.
