From January to August 2021, Egypt experienced a significant increase in its lentil import bill, with a 31.2% rise to a total of $77.994 million, compared to the same period in 2020 when it was $59.457 million. Despite a slight decrease in August, the monthly import of lentils also saw a notable increase, reaching $1.292 million compared to $4.835 million in August 2020. This surge in imports is attributed to a rise in the lentil price per ton, which increased by approximately 2,000 pounds to 19,000 pounds, ultimately driving the consumer price to 24 pounds per kilo. Egypt's lentil consumption is predominantly imported from three countries: Turkey, Canada, and Syria, with the demand being particularly high during the winter season, which accounts for about 65% of annual consumption.
