The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports a growth of 1% in milk production and a 2% increase in global cheese production in 2021. However, whole milk powder and non-fat dried milk production saw a decrease. The European Union also experienced an increase in cheese, butter, and whole milk powder production by 3%, while skimmed milk powder decreased by 6%. The EU's raw milk prices rose, leading to a decline in milk production, and rising inflation and input costs are expected to increase consumer prices for dairy products. Hungary saw a decrease in its cattle herd and a shift towards imported dairy products. The foreign trade balance of milk and dairy products in Hungary deteriorated by 19% in 2021, but sales revenue of exports increased by 5% and the value of imports by 6%.
