Hungary sees a peak in champagne consumption during the New Year's Eve holiday, with 60% of domestically produced champagne consumed locally. Despite a 9% decrease in domestic sparkling wine consumption in 2020 due to the pandemic, there was no further decline in 2021. There has been a shift towards higher-quality champagnes, with an increase in demand for traditional champagne brands, as well as Italian and German champagnes. The number of Hungarian companies with a license to produce champagne has grown to nearly 60. The economic downturn caused by the pandemic also affected the consumption of champagne in Europe, but there was a surprising 20% increase in consumption in 2021. France remains the leading champagne producer, followed by Italy, Germany, and Spain. The US is the 5th largest champagne producer in the world.
