Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government announced that the country is now food secure and will not need imports until the next harvest, a statement contradicting aid organizations that millions are food insecure. The government stated that over 544,000 metric tons of food, including maize and traditional grains, have been delivered to the Grain Marketing Board by farmers. However, the United Nations World Food Program, with funding from USAID, is importing corn from Zambia to rural districts as it does not plan to halt its program for the food insecure until the next harvest. This development comes amidst challenges faced by Zimbabwe, once the region's economic powerhouse, including drought and economic instability following the displacement of commercial farmers in 2000.
