The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has been granted a license by the Australian government to commercialize QCAV-4, a genetically modified Cavendish banana. This is a significant step in combating the Panama Disease TR4, a fungus that poses a major threat to the global banana industry. The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has also confirmed that QCAV-4 is safe for human consumption. The genetically modified banana, developed by Professor James Dale and his team over a span of 20 years, is the first of its kind to be approved for commercial production.
