The cape gooseberry, also known as uchuva, is experiencing a surge in international demand, particularly in the United States and Europe, as the hospitality sector recovers. The main markets include the Netherlands, United States, Germany, Canada, Belgium, France, and the United Arab Emirates, with exports of this fruit from Colombia growing by 18% between January and July of this year, generating US $ 23.6 million. Caribbean Exotics, a leading company in international sales, has seen a 15% increase in exports in the first half of 2021. Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia, highlights the role of the cape gooseberry in diversifying Colombia's agro-export portfolio and believes it has the potential to exceed US $ 100 million in exports within five years with joint efforts from the public and private sectors.
