Over 70% of Australian grape production is exported. The export growth registered in this season is attributed to improved trading conditions and diversification efforts. The 2021/22 season was the first full season in which exporters could treat their grapes at the Merrifield (Victoria) irradiation facility. In past seasons, producers from all over Australia had to ship their grapes to Brisbane for treatment before exporting them to Vietnam, making the supply chain longer. Over 90% of Australian grape exports are harvested in Southern Australia, so the Victoria facility is highly convenient as it reduces transit costs, shortens the supply chain, and allows grapes to arrive in Vietnam quicker, fresher, and with a longer shelf life. Vietnamese demand for Australian grapes increased due to positive growth in the GDP through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Australian grapes are mostly sold in the retail sector in Vietnam. Vietnamese consumers look for specific qualities when buying table grapes, including premium quality, safety, new and on-trend varieties, novelty innovations for the fruit gifting market, traceability, and innovative packaging. Australian grape producers strive to comply with all the qualities Vietnamese consumers demand to keep increasing exports. Unfortunately, weather conditions and labor shortages have created some challenges for grape producers, although they are still managing to achieve export growth. Australian table grape production and exports are forecasted to surge during the upcoming seasons since more vines planted over the past years are reaching maturity. Exports to Vietnam will remain strong and continue to grow.
