In W22 in the salmon landscape, it was reported that the harvest of rainbow trout, also known as Turkish Salmon, has begun in Samsun, Turkey. It is grown in net cages and exported to compete with Norwegian salmon in the export markets. The expected annual yield in Samsun for the 2023 season is around 15KMT of trout and 5KMT of seabass, a significant increase over the 2022 production volumes. According to the Eastern Black Sea Exporters' Union Board Member and Fisheries Sector Committee Chairman, 4,089T of Turkish salmon were exported to 12 countries from the Eastern Black Sea Region, generating revenue of USD 28.5M. Among these exports, Russia emerged as the leading destination with sales worth USD 24.7M, followed by Vietnam with USD 1.9M, and Vietnam with USD 1.1M. The city of Trabzon accounted for USD 20.3M of the region's exports, primarily selling Turkish salmon to 8 countries, with Russia being a prominent market.

At the beginning of W22, the price of fresh Chilean salmon fillets decreased in the United States market to USD 5.95-6.15/lb for the 2/3 lbs and USD 6.05-6.25/lb for the 3/4 lbs, FOB MIA prices. The supply of fresh Chilean fillets in the US market is high, while the demand is not very strong. Further, Charter flights are being used to transport a significant volume of Chilean salmon to China, leading to more competitive pricing compared to Norwegian salmon. This increased availability is resulting in greater discounts for consumers. Salmon production is expected to remain stable in Chile, with an average of 50 farming centers operating in the region. By 2023, the biomass harvested will reach 200KT of salmon, according to the region's economic body.

Meanwhile, Scotland witnessed a recovery from the effects of the COVID pandemic, with premium Scottish farmed salmon being air-freighted and served to diners in China as the post-pandemic situation improves. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) is planning to implement new industry restrictions, including limits on the permissible level of sea lice. A large-scale protest involving 50K individuals took place in Scotland, expressing concerns about the impact of highly protected marine zones. The government is now facing pressure to reconsider its plans aimed at safeguarding biodiversity. Norway initially proposed a 40% super-tax on profits in addition to the country's standard 22% corporation tax. However, after negotiations with other parties, a compromise was reached, resulting in the scaled-back super-tax rate of 25%, and a greater portion of it is allocated to municipal and county councils in coastal communities.
