In W33 in the blueberry landscape, Washington, United States (US) is the world's top blueberry producer, growing nearly 90 thousand tons of blueberries annually. In 2021, the state produced 180 million pounds (lbs) of blueberries valued at USD 228.4 million. Western Washington contributes around 55% of the state's blueberry yield, while Eastern Washington accounts for approximately 45%. Highbush blueberries, known for their height and higher yields, generated USD 464.4 million in economic impact. The US grows 95% of global blueberry production, with highbush blueberry growers contributing significantly to the nation's economy and employment. Despite being a top producer, the US still imports fresh blueberries.

The Michigan, US, blueberry season concluded with excellent quality and volumes. In the US market, the supply of Peruvian blueberries gradually increases as fall approaches, with anticipation for Peruvian Sekoya blueberries. Additionally, Argentina's blueberry season is set to begin in September. Furthermore, the 2022 harvest in Maine, the only US state with commercial blueberry harvesting, experienced a drop of over 25% to 77.5 million lbs, attributed to drought challenges in some areas. Despite this, prices remained relatively high at around USD 0.72/lb. Maine's blueberry industry has faced unpredictable weather, market fluctuations, climate change, and competition from Canada.

During the 2022/23 season, Chilean fresh blueberry exports experienced an 18% decrease in volume, amounting to 87.58 thousand tons with an estimated free on board (FOB) value of USD 412 million. The unit value reached its lowest point among southern hemisphere suppliers at USD 4.7/kg FOB. This challenging scenario is reflected in the Ñuble region, where farmers have observed declining production, exports, and available labor. The Association of Farmers of San Carlos revealed concerns about future labor availability due to the diminishing blueberry industry. High forecasted temperatures, water shortages, and competition from countries like Peru compound the uncertainties surrounding blueberry production and export.

The National Service for Food Health and Quality of Argentina (Senasa) has announced that registration for the Integrated System of Measures for Risk Mitigation (SMR) is open for Mendoza's fresh blueberry, pomegranate, and plum producers, packers, and exporters interested in exporting to Brazil. The SMR allows those who meet established phytosanitary requirements to avoid applying methyl bromide before exporting. To participate, establishments must register with Senasa, provide information about the exported varieties, implement phytosanitary pest management, and ensure fruit traceability throughout the production process until discharge.

South African blueberry exports are delayed by three weeks due to cold weather. Shipments are expected to remain subdued until W35, with the shipment volume expected to increase by W36. Lastly, scientists from the James Hutton Institute, United Kingdom (UK), are developing a new variety of giant blueberries with larger berries than typical ones. The study involves crossing around 40 blueberry varieties to find an optimal match for Scottish climate conditions without compromising size and taste. This innovation aims to increase yields and enhance sales.
