United States Tomato Prices More Than Double YoY in W48 Due to Effects of Hurricane Ian (Dec 7)

In W48, US fresh tomato prices are more than double compared to 2021, mainly due to hurricane Ian, which decimated Florida farms in the last week of September. Commonly, Florida would be supplying tomatoes after which Mexico's production would begin in Mid January, followed by California. However, in 2022 weather events disrupted this natural supply flow. In 2021, the pricing for a 25 lbs box of tomatoes was USD 19 to USD 27 wholesale. The wholesale price from the terminal in Los Angeles, CA in W48 is as follows:

25 lbs cartons Mexico Vine Ripe light red

4x5 size USD 57.00-58.00

5x5 size USD 57.00-58.00

Tomato Prices in Tokyo Market Will Increase as Supply Decreases Due to Falling Temperatures (Dec 7)

In November 2022, autumn tomatoes in Japan ripened well under the relatively warm temperature causing a large supply to the Tokyo market until W47. The market had 6-17% more domestic tomatoes compared to last year. Temperatures dropped in December 2022 and have been staying around 10ºC, which slowed down the pace of ripening for tomatoes. In W48, the Tokyo market had almost the same amount of tomatoes as in 2021. The price of tomatoes will gradually increase and trade around USD 2.55-2.91/kg during winter.
