As of mid-January 2024, live pig prices in Vietnam range from 49,000 - 51,000 VND/kg, with a projected increase in pork demand of only 5 - 10% around Tet, a decrease from previous years. High livestock costs, especially animal feed, are a concern for farmers and livestock businesses, accounting for 60% of pig farming costs and 70-80% of pangasius farming costs. The Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (Vasep) also noted the high cost of shrimp feed. Despite the World Bank's prediction of a 6.5% decrease in global agricultural product prices, the main raw material for animal feed, in 2024, price trends remain uncertain due to heavy reliance on imports.
