Global durian exports have increased more than 10 times in the past 10 years, reaching about 870,000 tons in 2022, with China driving the expansion of durian trade. Thailand accounts for over 90% of global durian exports, with the majority being imported by China and Singapore. The high perishability of fresh durian makes it difficult to transport, leading to most durian being processed into frozen, dried, or jam forms, but the average export price of durian is unusually high at about US$3 billion annually.
