Brazil and Thailand have settled a dispute over Thai subsidies to the sugarcane and sugar sector, which Brazil initiated at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2016. The issue involved Thai measures that violated WTO rules, leading to global market distortions and annual losses of around US$1 billion for the Brazilian production sector. The resolution was achieved through ongoing dialogue, culminating in a definitive policy change by Thailand to support the sugar sector, including the removal of subsidies.
