There has been a major shift of attention from maize by farmers along the Ghana Burkina Faso border to the production of sesame. The discovery of the sesame crop by farmers is influenced by the little to no cost in production as compared to maize. The decision to shift is also partly blamed on the scarcity and high cost of fertilizer this season. Farmers have now allocated large portions of the farmlands for the cultivation of white sesame seeds. Sesame harvest season begins in November.
