The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Turkey has announced a purchase of 1.25 million pufferfish to combat the invasive species' threat to the ecosystem, fisheries, and human health in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. The pufferfish, which can carry a poison 1200 times stronger than cyanide, will be purchased both as tails and whole. The ministry has set the purchase price and has already received applications from 24 fishermen. The pufferfish, originally from the Red Sea, has adapted to the Mediterranean and Aegean due to climate change. Consumption of the fish is strictly forbidden, and landing without permission is punishable by a penalty of 16 thousand TL.
