Brazilian supermarket consumption grew by 2.52% in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras). September saw a slight increase of 0.95% in consumption, but a decrease of 1.3% compared to August, due to a calendar effect. The growth in September was largely driven by transfers from the federal government to beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família program, Income Tax refunds, and releases of Small Value Requests for retirees and pensioners. Factors such as the payment of the thirteenth salary, remaining Income Tax refunds, and social program installments are expected to continue boosting consumption in the coming months.
