Niğde, a major apple production hub in Turkey, is expected to harvest around 500 thousand tons of apples from an area of 230 thousand decares this year. The city ranks 3rd in apple production in Turkey and exports about 30 percent of its apples to various countries including the European Union, Western Asian countries, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Arabian Peninsula. The province is also looking to open up to the African market. Despite a decrease in yield due to cold weather, producers are satisfied with the quality and have no marketing issues. The city faces challenges in storage and packaging, but has the highest number of new apple orchards in Turkey and is likely to lead in apple production in the next 3-4 years.
