Core message: Norwegian salmon farming giant SalMar recently disclosed that a serious production accident occurred at its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Jøvika, Norway. The accident, suspected to be caused by a leak of residual peracetic acid disinfectant, resulted in the death of approximately 574,000 salmon smolts, with one farming pool experiencing a 100% mortality rate. Following the incident, due to animal welfare and biosecurity considerations, the company decided to additionally cull approximately 1.4 million smolts to prevent the spread of potential health risks.
