The Indian government has successfully procured over 830 lakh tonnes of paddy and 262 lakh tonnes of wheat from farmers during the Kharif and Rabi marketing seasons 2022-23 and 2023-24, respectively. These farmers, numbering over 1.43 crore, have received a total of Rs 1,86,680 crore as payment at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The procurement has been smooth, with the Food Corporation of India and state agencies overseeing the process. The government has ensured that farmers are not obligated to sell their produce to these agencies and that the MSP is declared before harvest to prevent distress sales. The combined stock of wheat and rice has reached a record 570 lakh tonnes, sufficient to meet the nation's food grain requirements. Notably, the Agriculture ministry has predicted a record food grain production of 330.5 million tonnes for the agricultural year 2022-23, marking a 15-million-tonne increase from the previous year.
