Russia's agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, has imposed a ban on the import of tomatoes and apples from Azerbaijan with immediate effect from December 10, due to concerns over the supply of pests, specifically the South American tomato moth and eastern moth. This ban is part of wider restrictions targeting quarantine objects in products from Azerbaijan, as the volume of detections has significantly increased this year. The ban comes as Azerbaijan is a significant supplier of plant products to Russia, ranking first in tomato imports in 2019. The ban is not expected to lead to a tomato shortage in Russia, with the Ministry of Agriculture anticipating a harvest exceeding 14 million tons and an record harvest of 1.3 million tons from winter greenhouses. Additionally, the ban extends to tomatoes and peppers from Turkish provinces, the Kashkadarya region of Uzbekistan, and the Armavir region of Armenia, for similar reasons.
