Germany is set to experience a significant decrease in potato prices in supermarkets due to a bountiful harvest of approximately 12.7 million tonnes, marking a 9% increase from the previous year and 17% above the average. This abundance, attributed to an 9% expansion in potato planting areas, is anticipated to drive prices down from the current highs, with smaller sack prices expected to reduce from 1.16 euros to 0.85 euros per kilogram. Despite challenges like late diseases due to weather conditions, the harvest size is notably larger than last year's. However, the consumption of potatoes in Germany has seen a decline, with a 28% drop since 1990 as more people have shifted their preference towards rice and pasta.
