The South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta), a quarantine pest that was initially introduced to Ukraine in 2010, has been detected in the Kharkiv region, expanding its impact to over 1.19 thousand hectares as of January 1, 2021. Originally spread through contaminated tomato shipments from Turkey and Syria, this pest targets nightshade family plants, including tomatoes, eggplants, potatoes, and peppers, with the potential to destroy up to 100% of the crop. Its rapid reproduction and adaptation to Ukrainian conditions have facilitated its spread across the country, leading to concerns about its impact on agricultural areas.
