Chile is facing a shortage in its avocado supply and is looking to Peru to meet its demand. The demand is so high that a kilo of Peruvian avocado can cost more than three dollars in Chilean supermarkets. Due to water scarcity and cold climate, it is difficult for Chile to increase its own production. In 2022, Chile has imported 40,814 tons of Peruvian avocado, which is 10% of the total national exports. The Ancash region in Chile is the fifth largest producer of avocado in the country. However, small producers are frustrated as the farm price per kilo has fallen significantly as the 2022 harvest progressed.
